Shaun Ryder, infamous vocalist with the Happy Mondays makes his debut appearance in Wigan later this month when he appears at Club Nirvana for a special one–off DJ appearance.

The Happy Mondays were famously signed by Tony Wilson to Factory Records in the mid 1980’s. He signed them on the strength of one live performance - a battle of the bands at the Hacienda in which they finished last.

The band became an integral part of the ‘Madchester’ scene, with their music perhaps the most original, fusing indie with elements of house, funk and northern soul. They released 4 albums along with a clutch of hit singles including 24 Hour Party People, Step On, Hallelujah and Kinky Afro before splitting up in 1992.

By 1995, Shaun and Bez had gone on to form a new group, Black Grape. They released their debut album ‘It’s Great When You’re Straight…Yeah’ to critical acclaim before splitting up 3 years later.

In 2004, Shaun reformed the Happy Mondays. Last year the band released their first album in 15 years and the band are still touring regularly.

Prior to Ryder’s set, the night will kick off with performances from four local acts. Headlining are Dirty Circus, who carry a Shaun Ryder link, being managed by the ex Happy Mondays manager Phil Saxe. Joining them are The Dead Shores, The Painted Saints and John Maguire.
