Lupine Records Launch Night II (Wigan Gig Wed 1st Nov)

Lupine Records Album Launch
Wed 1st Nov 2006
Kings Electric, Wigan
Cost £3
with: MOCO + THE V.Cs + GERARD STARKIE + MAT TURNER

Copies of the 10" record 'Tales From The Lux' featuring these four artists plus Dirty Circus & The Loungs will be available for purchase on the night. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Moco
There is a new verve about Moco going off recent gigs. The new material has instilled a sense of direction in the band, where in the past they have been seen as chaotic, messy, a spectacle to witness, where now they are a well-oiled beatclub northern-soul rock machine. Singer Jones, too, has seemingly changed his ways; sure the gangly (cool) dancing still exists, but there is a more impassioned performance from him, like that of an Otis Redding and this is maybe because the new material they are performing is the best they have written since forming the band. Still with that pop sensibility, still the fun weirdness, they are still a spectacle, albeit a special kind of one.

The V.C's
This is their last ever gig. After entertaining for the last few years as slight oddballs with a sci-fi fixation and surf guitar habit, The V.C's have decided to call it a day. They've been one of the best and most original bands to have played around the North West and they will be sorely missed. From lab coats, space-visors, and robotic-nurse bass players to Theremins and demon drummers, they certainly stood out, but it was the quality of their songs that lifted them more. From the bursts of 'No Reason' to the epic that was 'Ray Harryhousen...' see them tonight on their last gig; don't forget your ray guns!

Gerard Starkie

Witness are always going to be a part of Gerard Starkey, and out on his own he is able to step up and offer himself up to listeners in a way he possibly never could with the restrictions a band can bring. A gentle soul but a solid and strong songwriter, he gathered plenty of favourable reviews from his work with his own band, and going off his new songs, that is about to happen again. He continues his tour tonight to try and catch the melodic ear and mind of the music going public.

Matthew Turner
Listening to Mat Turner will blow the blinds off the windows in your head. He sucks you into his music with an almost mystical quality. He never seems rushed or agitated. He lets his music flow, do its thing. Acoustic psychedelic blues with an edge to the song writing that muses on nature, morality, religion, love and trout with wings. A performer not to miss.
