Lupine Records Launch Night I (Manchester Mon 30th Oct)Monday 30th Oct 2006
Dry Bar (Downstairs), Manchester
Cost: £5
ITC Showcase / Lupine Records Launch featuring:
THE LOUNGS + DIRTY CIRCUS + GERARD STARKIE + THE V.Cs
The Loungs
Dubbed 'the best dressed men in St Helens' there is more to The Loungs than their sweatbands and identical patterned shirt/tie combos. What you will find is a band of merry men intent on jangling guitar lines, harmonising like bearded angels and displaying a cheeky inventiveness that brings smiles to an audience and accepted chin strokes and foot taps from miserable detached gits. Get on your dancing flip-flops and bring your own panpipes.

Dirty Circus
There's an element of menace to Dirty Circus that comes through in their music, all pulsing synths and sinister drums, and this is curtailed in places by some friendly guitar riffs that bend towards the Roses. They have the right blend of attitude, of excitement, of songs and of graciousness. They realise they are making music for the people; for the everyman who wants to have a drink and a good time to some good tunes. Raise a glass and smoke a fag, the Circus is in town tonight.

Gerard Starkie
Witness are always going to be a part of Gerard Starkey, and out on his own he is able to step up and offer himself up to listeners in a way he possibly never could with the restrictions a band can bring. A gentle soul but a solid and strong songwriter, he gathered plenty of favourable reviews from his work with his own band, and going off his new songs, that is about to happen again. This is the first night of a tour to launch himself back into the ears and minds of the public.

The V.C's
After entertaining for the last few years as slight oddballs with a sci-fi fixation and surf guitar habit, The V.C's have decided to call it a day. They've been one of the best and most original bands to have played around the North West and they will be sorely missed. From lab coats, space-visors, and robotic-nurse bass players to Theremins and demon drummers, they certainly stood out, but it was the quality of their songs that lifted them more. From the bursts of 'No Reason' to the epic that was 'Ray Harryhousen...' see them tonight on their penultimate gig; don't forget your ray guns!
