There's twelve. I couldn't think of anyone else who deserved to go into that list to be honest.
I can't decide between the top three.

Let me justify all of that.
Rage go into that list because there's not many other bands who knew as much about fighting the system as those lads. According to wikipedia the solo album of ZDLR is slated for December 31st 2005 but it could be propaganda. They said that album would be out in 2002 and it never happened...just like Axl Rose's album.
U2 speak for themselves. Biggest band in the world in 1987, 1988 and 1991 after Achtung Baby.
Oasis - 1994 to 1996.
Pearl Jam spent the 90's raging against the machine as well. Spent 18 months in court with Ticketmaster and refused to do any videos for one of their albums.
Nirvana - speak for themselves as well.
The Offspring - old stuff was legendary.
Foo Fighters - Grohl one of the biggest rock starts around. Respect by most.
Green Day - probably the biggest band in the world at present but they need to move on from AI.
Guns 'N Roses - despite their singer being a bit of a bigoted tawt, they've left their legacy.
RHCP - came back from the bottle and the drugs.
Stone Roses - couldn't thing of anyone else. Massive UK band in early 90's.
Blur - had a war with Oasis.
